Where to Shoot Clays This Week
April 19, 2025
Introduction
Welcome to the new Breaking Clay Newsletter. First off, a little history: I got hooked on trap shooting a few years ago after being invited to the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club on a Tuesday afternoon. Ever since, I’ve participated in both of their Spring and Fall trap leagues, but only shooting once a week had me yearning for more.
I’ve always heard stories of other clubs in the area via word of mouth, but sometimes info was hard to come by, so that’s why I decided to compile a comprehensive list of public shooting opportunities—including trap, skeet, 5-stand and sporting clays—in Southwestern PA and beyond. As you’ll see below, if you love shooting clays, you can find somewhere (within a short drive) every day of the week, even if you’re not a member! Scroll down to learn more about where and when to shoot.
I hope this newsletter opens your eyes to somewhere new to shoot in 2025. And please, if you have any comments or feedback or want to add an opportunity or event to the list, please contact me.
Thanks for subscribing and please share with your friends! 👇️

What is trapshooting?
Trapshooting is a game of movement, action and timing. It requires the accuracy and skill to repeatedly aim, fire and break the 4-1/4 inch clay target which are launched through the air from a single machine simulating the flight path of a bird fleeing a hunter.

What is sporting clays?
Sporting clays courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants, other upland birds, and even rabbits. Targets may be thrown from literally any angle or distance to simulate wingshooting, and six different sizes of clay targets are used to further give the shooter the experience of actual hunting conditions.
