Fun fact: Skeet shooting was invented in the early 1920s by Massachusetts hunters Charles Davis and William Foster as a practice game to better simulate the varied angles of upland bird hunting. They originally called it “shooting around the clock” because shooters moved around a full circle of stations. After neighbors complained about pellets raining onto their property, the inventors cut the layout in half into the familiar semicircle with high and low houses that we use today. When the sport was introduced in magazines, a naming contest was held, and “skeet” (from the Scandinavian/Norwegian skyte, meaning “to shoot”) won.

The Library Sportsmen’s Association recently announced their 2026–2027 Fall/Winter Trap League, which begins on Thursday, September 10, and runs for 10 weeks. The league format will remain the same as it has for the past several years:

  • 500 total targets

  • 50 targets per week for 10 weeks

  • $20.00 per week

Shooters may shoot up to two weeks ahead and make up as many missed weeks as needed throughout the season. As in previous years, additional time will be available after the scheduled 10 weeks to complete any remaining targets. If you fall behind, don’t worry—we want everyone to have the opportunity to finish the league. A one-time $10.00 league entry fee is required. Participation in the Lewis Class is optional and costs an additional $25.00. Please bring cash or a check when you register. Registration will be available every Thursday night, with sign-ups closing on Thursday, September 24, the third week of the league.

The Tom Teagarden Annual Clay Shoot, held at California Gun Club, is quickly approaching (October 10th), and the organizers are kindly asking for donations for their Chinese auction. If you wish to donate, contact Jim Reedy; his contact info is on the flyer below.

What is sporting clays?
Sporting clays courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants, other upland birds, and even rabbits. Targets may be thrown from literally any angle or distance to simulate wingshooting, and six different sizes of clay targets are used to further give the shooter the experience of actual hunting conditions.
