Fun Fact: Sporting clays originated in England in the early 1900s (with roots in the 1920s for organized competitions) as a way to simulate real hunting scenarios without using live birds. It didn't arrive in the United States until 1980, when outdoor writer Bob Brister wrote a influential Field & Stream article titled “At Last a Clay Target Game for Hunters.” The first official U.S. tournament followed shortly after at Remington’s Lordship Gun Club in Connecticut. Before that, American shooters were mostly limited to trap and skeet.)
What a fantastic day we had at the Coal Ridge Sporting Clay’s Chili Shoot event on Saturday! Shooters from across the tristate area took advantage of the great weather and the turnout was massive. My friend Dan (pictured below) came out to shoot clays for the first time and carded a 52. He may be hooked! I also got to meet Doug, the man behind the popular Tri-State Sporting Clays Facebook page; be sure to head over and give the page a follow.
If you missed out, don’t worry because Coal Ridge’s 4th Annual Shamrock Shoot is happening on Saturday, March 14th! Make sure you don’t miss it—call 304-670-8919 to reserve your spot!

Dan enjoyed shooting the Beretta A400 semi.
A quick trap shooting update from our friends at the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon Sportsmen’s Club (Eighty Four, PA): Their last winter trap practice day is scheduled for Sunday, March 15th at noon. Then Tuesday, March 24th at 5:00 p.m. will be the spring warmup before officially starting their spring trap league on Tuesday, March 31st. What’s more, in prior years, there was always a four-week break between the spring and fall leagues; the break was eliminated so the fall league starts immediately after the spring league ends.
They also secured dates for their trap banquets: the spring banquet will be held on Wednesday, July 27th, and the fall banquet will be on Wednesday, October 28th. The trap league is open to the public, so check out www.dmlsclub.com for more info.
Finally, if you haven’t checked out the wildly popular Cosmic Clays, Roscoe Sportsmen’s Association (Coal Center, PA) is hosting their next event on Saturday, March 14th.

Cosmic Clays has been a hit this winter!
If you know any friends who share a passion for shooting, we’d be thrilled if you could share this newsletter with them! Whether you forward this email or guide them to www.breakingclay.co to join the fun, we truly appreciate it.

What is sporting clays?
Sporting clays courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants, other upland birds, and even rabbits. Targets may be thrown from literally any angle or distance to simulate wingshooting, and six different sizes of clay targets are used to further give the shooter the experience of actual hunting conditions.
