Fun fact: Despite being called "clay pigeons," today's targets aren't actually made of clay anymore—they're usually limestone mixed with pitch and pigment, but the old nickname stuck as a nod to the live bird origins.
Has anyone been to Shamrock Sporting Clays? Based in Rockwood, PA, the course features 15 stations spread out along a scenic one-mile trail, four sizes of clays, and over 30 advanced target throwers that challenge shooters from every direction imaginable.
Online reviews are overwhelmingly positive. One attendee shared: “I attended the opening event at Shamrock Sporting Clays and was impressed by the craftsmanship and attention to detail everywhere. I found everything to be top notch from the lodge and views to the course to the signature drink.”
They’re open Thursday - Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. and reservations are required. Non-member pricing for 100 targets is $110 (plus cart) and $65.00 if you’re a Keystone Ramblers member. Give them a call at 814-233-3916 or send them an email.
Ruffsdale Gun Club is hosting an ATA trap shoot this Sunday featuring both singles and handicap events. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. with shooting at 10:00 a.m. Check out their Facebook page for more info.

What is trapshooting?
Trapshooting is a game of movement, action and timing. It requires the accuracy and skill to repeatedly aim, fire and break the 4-1/4 inch clay target which are launched through the air from a single machine simulating the flight path of a bird fleeing a hunter.

What is sporting clays?
Sporting clays courses are designed to simulate the hunting of ducks, pheasants, other upland birds, and even rabbits. Targets may be thrown from literally any angle or distance to simulate wingshooting, and six different sizes of clay targets are used to further give the shooter the experience of actual hunting conditions.
